So you are in Kathmandu and you have been walking around the city for a few days. The streets are crazy. There are people everywhere, noise, dust, and traffic. You have seen some temples and eaten some good food. But honestly, you’re starting to feel burnt out from all the chaos.
Here’s the thing though. Some of the most amazing experiences in Nepal are just a couple of hours from the city. You don’t need to spend weeks hiking or spend lots of money. You can do incredible day trips that will blow your mind. You can watch the sun come up over the Himalayas. You can walk through ancient cities that look like they’re from hundreds of years ago. You can hike through forests and see villages where life hasn’t changed much in generations.
I’ve done a lot of research. I’ve read what people say on Reddit, checked Google reviews, and looked at what travel sites recommend. I’ve put together a list of the best day trips you can do from Kathmandu. These aren’t just okay trips. These are the ones that people really love and remember.
Table of Contents
1. Nagarkot: Watching the Sun Rise Over the Mountains
Okay, let me be honest. Nagarkot is probably the most famous day trip from Kathmandu. And there’s a really good reason why. If you go there and catch the sunrise, you will see something that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
Nagarkot is about 1.5 hours from Kathmandu by car. It sits up high on a hill. When the sun comes up, you can see the Himalayan mountains in the distance. On a clear day, you can literally see Mount Everest from Nagarkot. You can also see other huge mountains like Langtang and Ganesh Himal. It’s seriously insane.
Most people doing this trip wake up super early. Your guide or the tour company will pick you up around 5 in the morning. You drive there in the dark. Then you wait at the viewpoint and watch the sky change colours as the sun comes up. It goes from dark purple to orange to pink to yellow. The mountains start turning red. It sounds corny when I describe it, but I promise you it’s not. It’s really beautiful.

After the sun comes up and you’ve taken about a million photos, you usually eat breakfast at a restaurant on the hill. Then a lot of people do a hike down to an old temple called Changu Narayan. That hike takes about 3 to 4 hours. You walk through villages and see how local people actually live. You see their fields and their homes. You walk through forest areas. It’s a nice way to spend the morning after watching the sunrise.
I’ve read lots of comments online from people who have done this. One person said “I didn’t want to wake up that early, but the sunrise was absolutely amazing. It was worth every minute of lost sleep.” Another person said “The hike down was so nice. You get to see real Nepal, not just the tourist stuff.”
One thing to know though. The road to Nagarkot is pretty dusty. So your ride up there is going to be dusty and you’ll probably have some dust all over you. But that’s just part of the adventure.
What you need to know:
- How long: 6 to 8 hours total including the drive
- How much it costs: Around 50 to 90 pounds per person
- Best time to go: October through May when the sky is clear
- Is it hard: Easy to medium. The hike down is not too tough
- Do you have to pay to go in: The national park fee is usually included in tour prices
2. Bhaktapur: It’s Like Walking Into History
Have you ever walked into a place and felt like you went back in time? That’s what Bhaktapur is like. It’s only about 15 kilometres from Kathmandu, but it feels like you’re in a completely different world.
Bhaktapur is this really old city. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, which means it’s protected and super important historically. The best part is that the old part of the city doesn’t have cars. Seriously. No cars. You can just walk around and hear the sounds of the city from hundreds of years ago. You hear people talking. You hear water running in the old stone channels. You see people playing cards. You see women washing clothes in old stone ponds. It’s wild.
The main area to visit is called Durbar Square. There’s this amazing building called the 55 Window Palace. It was built in 1427. The woodwork on the windows is insane. Every single window is carved with intricate designs. You can just stand there and stare at the details for hours. Then there’s this temple called Nyatapola Temple. It has five stories and it’s the tallest temple in the whole country. It’s absolutely huge.
But what makes Bhaktapur really special is that real people still live there. This isn’t a dead museum or a place that only exists for tourists. People live in these old houses. Kids play in the squares. Old men sit in the courtyards. There’s this area called Pottery Square where people still make pots the way they’ve done it for centuries. You can watch them literally making pots right there.

The food in Bhaktapur is really good too. They make this sweet yoghurt called Juju dhau that comes in a clay pot. It’s creamy and sweet and honestly kind of addictive. You should definitely try it.
What you need to know:
- How long: About 6 to 7 hours including the drive
- How much it costs: Around 25 to 40 pounds for a full day tour
- Entry fee: About 10 pounds
- How far: 15 kilometres east of Kathmandu
- Is it hard: Not hard at all. It’s mostly just walking around and looking at things
- Best time: Any time is good, but October to May has clearer skies
3. Panauti to Namobuddha: Hiking and Spirituality Mixed Together
If you want a real hiking experience that also has spiritual meaning, this is the one for you. Namobuddha is a place that Buddhist pilgrims travel to from all over the world. According to Buddhist stories, Buddha came here and gave himself to a hungry tiger and her babies to show how much compassion is possible. It’s a deeply meaningful place.
The hike starts from a town called Panauti. You’ll walk through fields and forests. A lot of the trail goes through yellow mustard fields that look incredible when they’re in bloom. You’ll cross some bridges that shake a bit as you walk, which is kind of exciting. You’ll see villages where people are just living their normal lives.
The actual climb to Namobuddha is pretty tough. It goes uphill for a long time. You gain about 750 metres of elevation. Okay I know that sounds crazy, but what it means is you go uphill for a really long time and it gets harder and harder. It takes maybe 3 to 4 hours. Your legs will probably hurt.
But here’s the thing. The whole time you’re going up, the view keeps getting better. You can see more of the valley below. You can see other mountains. And then when you finally make it to the top, you see this white monastery with prayer flags flying everywhere. The view is incredible. You can see for miles. Mountains are visible in the distance. You feel like you’re on top of the world.

The monastery itself is really peaceful. There are monks there doing prayers. There are people meditating. There are prayer flags everywhere. Pilgrims from other countries are there too. It’s a really special place to be.
Then you hike back down, which is easier on your lungs but harder on your knees. The whole thing including the drive takes most of the day, but people who do it say it’s one of the best experiences they had in Nepal.
What you need to know:
- How long: 8 to 10 hours total
- How much it costs: 45 to 70 pounds per person with a good guide
- How hard: Pretty hard. This is a real hike
- Elevation gain: About 750 metres
- Best time: October to May when it’s dry
- What to bring: Good hiking shoes, lots of water, sunscreen
- Best route: The one that starts from Balathali
4. Chandragiri Hills: Mountains Without the Hard Work
Okay, so not everyone wants to wake up at 4 AM or hike for 8 hours. And that’s totally fine. Chandragiri Hills is perfect if you want amazing mountain views but you don’t want to do a lot of hard work.
The main thing at Chandragiri is a cable car. You ride this cable car up the mountain. It takes about 12 to 15 minutes. As you go up, you see the whole Kathmandu Valley getting smaller below you. You see the city spreading out. The cable car ride itself is actually pretty cool and not scary.
When you get to the top, you’re at 2,551 metres elevation. There’s a temple there dedicated to Lord Shiva. The views from the top are absolutely incredible. On a clear day you can see so many mountains. You can see Ganesh Himal and Manaslu and Langtang. Sometimes you can even see Everest and Annapurna.
At the top they’ve built restaurants and cafes. So you can sit down and eat lunch while you’re staring at all these snow covered mountains. It’s a pretty nice experience to be honest.

If you want to do more stuff, there are hiking trails around the top. There’s also a zipline if that’s your thing. There’s a rock climbing wall. There’s even a little fun park for kids. But you don’t have to do any of that if you don’t want to.
The best part about Chandragiri is that it’s cheap. The cable car costs maybe 6 to 8 pounds. The whole day trip with a guide and transport costs like 30 to 50 pounds. For the views you get, that’s a really good price.
What you need to know:
- How long: 4 to 5 hours total
- How much it costs: 30 to 50 pounds per person
- Cable car ride: 12 to 15 minutes each way
- How high: 2,551 metres
- How far: About 12.5 kilometres from the city
- How hard: Super easy. There’s barely any hiking
- Best time: October to May for clear skies
- Good for: Families, people who don’t like hard exercise, photographers
5. Pharping and Dakshinkali: Religion and Spirituality
This trip is cool because you get to see two completely different religions in one day. You get to see Buddhism and Hinduism. It’s a great way to understand how people in Nepal are spiritual.
Pharping is about 1.5 hours south of Kathmandu. It’s a quiet place where Buddhist monks live and study. The main thing to visit is a cave where a really important Buddhist teacher meditated. His name was Guru Padmasambhava. People sometimes call him Guru Rinpoche. He brought Buddhism to Tibet like over a thousand years ago. The cave here is really peaceful. You can go inside and sit and feel how quiet it is. There are monasteries nearby where you can watch monks do prayers in the afternoon. They usually let visitors watch.
Then you drive a short distance and get to Dakshinkali Temple. This is a Hindu temple dedicated to a goddess called Kali. She’s a fierce goddess. A lot of Hindus come here to pray to her. This temple looks really different from the Buddhist places. It’s in the forest and the energy there is different. It’s louder and busier. People are chanting and praying.

If you go on Tuesday or Saturday, there are special ceremonies. This temple is really authentic. You’ll see actual worshippers there, not just tourists. Some of the ceremonies involve animal sacrifices which might be uncomfortable if you’re not used to it, but it’s a real and important part of Hindu tradition.
The views from both places are nice. Pharping is higher up so you can see across the valley. Dakshinkali is in the forest so it’s green and cool.
What you need to know:
- How long: 7 to 8 hours total
- How much it costs: 25 to 45 pounds per person
- How far: 1.5 hours south
- Best days: Tuesday or Saturday for special ceremonies
- Special season: September to October for the Dashain festival
- How hard: Easy. It’s mostly driving and short walks
- Best time: October to May
Other Cool Day Trips Worth Knowing About
Shivapuri National Park
If you’re a serious hiker and you’ve already done the easy trips, Shivapuri is where you go. It’s on the north side of Kathmandu. The hike goes up to the highest peak in the Shivapuri range.
This is tough work. The whole hike is about 18 kilometres and it takes 6 to 7 hours. You go uphill a lot. You walk through forests. You pass by a monastery. At the top you get views of the Langtang mountains and the whole Kathmandu Valley below you.
It costs 40 to 60 pounds and you definitely want a guide who knows the area well. October to May is the best time.
Dhulikhel
Dhulikhel is an old town southeast of Kathmandu. It’s not as famous as Bhaktapur but it has that old feeling too. People don’t talk about it as much so it’s less crowded. If you want mountain views and you don’t want tons of tourists, this is a good option.
Tips for Making Your Day Trips Better
When Should You Go
October to May is definitely the best time. The sky is clear. You can see the mountains. The weather is nice. During monsoon season which is June to August, it rains a lot. Everything is cloudy. You can’t see anything. Don’t go then. January and February can be cold up in the mountains so bring warm clothes if you go then.
Getting Around and Hiring Guides
Book your trips through a tour company or ask your hotel to help. A private guide will cost you 10 to 20 pounds a day. Having a private guide is so much better than going with a big group of tourists. Your guide can explain things. They can take you off the main path to cool places. They can adjust how fast you go so you’re not exhausted.
Getting in Shape
Be real with yourself about how fit you are. Some hikes like Panauti to Namobuddha are actually hard. If you’re not a regular hiker, it’s going to be tough. Take lots of breaks. Drink lots of water. Don’t push yourself to the point where you’re miserable. Mountains are hard to breathe in too, so that’s another thing to think about.
How Much Money to Spend
Day trips can cost anywhere from 20 to 30 pounds if it’s cheap, or 60 to 90 pounds if it’s a nice private tour. Add in money for food, entrance fees, and tips for guides and drivers. Spending money on a good guide is worth it because they make the whole experience better.
Being Respectful
Religious places need you to be respectful. Take your shoes off when they tell you to. Wear clothes that cover your arms and legs. Ask before you take pictures of people. Most local people are really nice and friendly if you’re nice and friendly to them.
Wrapping It All Up
Kathmandu is worth exploring. Spend a few days there. See the temples. Eat the food. Feel the energy. But also get out of the city and do these day trips. You’ll see things that look like they’re from another world. You’ll meet people. You’ll see how different parts of Nepal look and feel.
Each of these day trips is different. You might want the sunrise at Nagarkot. You might want to walk through ancient cities at Bhaktapur. You might want to challenge yourself hiking to Namobuddha. You might want easy mountain views from Chandragiri. You might want to understand Buddhism and Hinduism at Pharping and Dakshinkali.
All of them are worth doing. All of them will give you memories that stay with you. Plan ahead. Book with people you trust. Respect the places you visit. Be curious about the people you meet. That’s how you have the best experience.
Go do these day trips. You won’t regret it.
