Changunarayan, Bhaktapur District, Central Region, Nepal

Changunarayan Temple, perched on a gentle hilltop about 12 kilometres east of Kathmandu, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is believed to date back to the 4th century AD. Rebuilt in 1702 after a fire, its double-tiered pagoda roof gleams with gilded copper and its doorways are crowned with exquisitely carved toranas. In front stands a unique 5th-century Garuda statue—the divine carrier of Vishnu—kneeling with folded palms. The main courtyard contains the highest concentration of Licchhavi-era stone inscriptions and religious art in Nepal, including a stunning 12th-century bas-relief of Vishnu riding Garuda that appears on Nepal’s 10-rupee banknote. Surrounding shrines honour Shiva, Durga, Laxmi Narayan and Chhinnamasta, reflecting a remarkable spirit of sectarian harmony. Visitors often arrive via Bhaktapur’s microbuses or trek from Nagarkot, pausing to admire the ancient village and verdant woodlands of champak trees. Throughout the year, worshippers flock here for Harishayani Ekadashi and Haribodhini Ekadashi festivals, immersing themselves in devotional rites. Beyond its spiritual allure, the temple offers panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley and the distant Himalayas. Quiet pathways wind through stone courtyards, inviting reflection amid centuries-old carvings. Changunarayan’s living traditions, vibrant festivals and serene setting blend to create an unforgettable glimpse into Nepal’s cultural and religious heritage.
